Throughout this course I have greatly developed my writing. There was a total of eight course learning objectives this semester and I feel like I have achieved most of them. Also, I feel like my view on writing has evolved during this semester as I began to see how different writing is in different situations. This course mainly taught me how writing is used in the field of an engineer. I learned that I have to write differently when writing a technical description (simple and descriptive) and when writing something like a memo (concise and straight to the point).
When writing my memo, one course objective I achieved was enhancing my strategies for drafting, revising, editing, and self-assessment, as I was able to make my final memo more concise and less complicated to understand, also I was able to add relevant additional info. Another course learning objective I achieved during this assignment was negotiating my writing goals and audience expectations regarding conventions of genre, medium, and rhetorical situation. I did this because my goal was to show why the printing process in the NAC is very inefficient however, I needed to make it concise since it’s a memo and memos should be long.
As I was writing my lab report analysis, I was able to formulate and articulate a stance through and in my writing. I wrote how the lab report I chose to analyze was a good lab report as it contains all the aspects it needed, and I detailed the explanation for each part. I also strengthened my source use practices and practice the use of various online databases and the internet when completing this assignment and also when writing the technical description, as well as the proposal. I did this by using the CCNY online databases that all CCNY students have access to, as well as different websites on the internet. I would cite the information I used using APA style which I learned to do in this semester.
Additionally, when writing the proposal, we were in groups of four. This allowed me to develop and engage in the social and collaborative aspects of the writing process. I did this by peer reviewing others works as well as having others review mine. Also, we split up the work for the proposal, so we had to make each part work together.
In conclusion, I have learned a lot about writing during this semester. I did many different assignments which allowed to enhance different parts of my writing as well as learn different strategies and aspects about writing in general.
